Before discussing about 'Parenting Styles', let's look at the various factors influencing child development. Some of them are nutrition, early stimulation and child rearing practices.
Our topic of concern-Parenting Styles-comes under child rearing practices.
There are mainly four different parenting styles,
- Authoritative
- Authoritarian
- Permissive
- Neglectful
Authoritative Parenting Style:
It is know as positive parenting.
The main characteristics of this parenting style are
- It is democratic.
- Parents solve the problem together with the child.
- Parents set clear rules and expectations.
- There is a room for open communication and natural consequences.
- Is is considered as the best style of parenting.
Authoritarian Parenting Style:
This parenting style is obedience driven.
The main characteristics of this parenting style are
- The parent will play the role of a disciplinarian.
- This is a parent-centered parenting style.
- There are strict rules and punishment for overriding the rules.
- There is no regard for child's emotion.
Permissive Parenting Style:
This is known as 'the child's way' parenting style.
The main characteristics of this parenting style are
- Parents rarely give or enforce rules.
- It is fully child dominant.
- Parents overindulge child to avoid conflict.
Neglectful Parenting Style:
This is known as 'absent parenting'.
The main characteristics of this parenting style are
- Little nurturance or guidance to the child from parents.
- The parents are indifferent to children's emotion.
The above are the four different styles of parenting.
